Arrest ends credit card crime spree

Karyn Merida is in jail in Jefferson County after police say she was going to doctors' offices across the state and stealing employees' purses.

"We were very glad to hear she'd been picked up in Jefferson County," said Sherelle Roberts of the Lexington Police Department.

Lexington Police say Merida stole a credit card from an office in the St. Joseph Office Park last year and used it to buy gift cards. She's also charged with burglaries, using stolen credit cards, and identification theft in Jefferson County. Police say these crimes have been on the rise.

"Financial crimes are some of the fastest growing crimes that we see in Lexington and people just don't commit one, they normally commit several," said Roberts.

Merida was arrested here in Lexington last summer when she was accused of shoplifting from Dick's Sporting Goods and Marshall's. Those charges are still pending. Police in Jeffersontown say more victims could still turn up.

"I would say there's a very good chance. With things like this its victim's maybe not realizing until a later date that their purse or credit card had been stolen. May not realize that it was missing," said Major Ken Hatmaker of the Jeffersontown Police.

Merida is due back in Jefferson County court later this month.
