Police are investigating a break-in at a center named in honor of a fallen Lexington firefighter.
On Friday morning, workers arrived at the Brenda Cowan Coalition on Devonport Drive and found a mess. Staff members believe the thieves came in through a back door and maybe even an open window and then kicked through a few doors to get inside. Once in the building, the thieves ransacked the office causing thousands of dollars in damage and taking off with cash.
"The unfortunate part is you know for any of us non profit agencies in this community is we're the wrong place. Because there's nothing here to take," said Karen Trivette, executive director for the Brenda Cowan Coalition.
The Cowan Center provides various programs for women and children in the community.
