LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington Downtown Development Authority officials say two companies, LOOK Cinemas and Krikorian Premiere Theatres, have contacted them to express interest in building a cinema in the downtown area. People who live there say it would be a great addition.
"Downtown Lexington is really building itself and growing and I think that's one thing that we could really use down here. For a lot of kids in college, it's kind of difficult to get all the way down Nicholasville Road," said UK senior Alauna Anderson.
The most likely location for a theater, according to the Authority, would be on top of the city transit center, four blocks from the proposed Rupp Arena Arts and Entertainment District. Officials say it would complement that project.
"Lexington wants downtown to thrive. Why not give people another reason to come downtown?" asked Drew Wash, who works downtown.
Officials say they hope a more upscale theater could create a destination that people wouldn't find in their own neighborhoods, possibly including a bowling alley and restaurant.
"That would be awesome. I think the ability to eat and watch a movie is something people really appreciate, so I think that would definitely be a positive addition to this area," said Anderson.
Downtown Development Authority officials say the next step is to get a proposal from one of the companies.
