Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Airport among airlines cutting flights

(WKYT) -- As the nation's cash-strapped airlines worked to cut costs the number of flights took a 14 % nosedive nationwide.

And Kentucky's three biggest airports took even bigger hits.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology found since 2007 the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky airport was among the worst hit.

Airlines cut more than 64 % of all flights.

Louisville's airport saw a 22.8 %t decline while Lexington's Blue Grass Airport saw a 18.5 % decline.

The cuts come as airlines weeded out unprofitable flights reduced their use of gas-guzzling small jets and underwent several rounds of mergers.

Delta's merger with Northwest prompted the majority of the cuts at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Airport.
