Fire officials looking into couch burning celebration

What a week it's going to be everyone in the state is gearing up for the Kentucky battle this weekend in the Final Four.

UK and UofL face off Saturday in New Orleans. Fans across the state are expecting a showdown. That has police and fire preparing especially after a fiery celebration this past weekend.

"We will be watching, there will be no warnings, there's not going to be citations, if they're caught, they will be arrested and they will go to jail," said Lexington Fire Major Mark Blankenship.

Blankenship, who works in the arson bureau says, investigators are currently going through video and photos taken during Sunday's celebration along State Street following UK's win over Baylor, where fans set a couch on fire.

"The problem we get into when they start setting things on fire is the potential for people to get hurt or the potential for those fires to expand into vehicles and structures," he said.

He says they're working with the University and using social media to identify the person (s) responsible for setting the fire.

"We want our fans and students to have fun, but they have to celebrate responsibly, or there will be consequences," said Blankenship.

Officials tell us they will be installing surveillance cameras this week in the areas where students and fans congregate. They will use that video for pending investigations.

Violators face disorderly conduct and wanton endangerment charges.
