Doctor Candice Flener is recovering after an attack outside the Fayette County Health Department.
Lexington Police say a man and a young girl jumped the dentist in front of the facility on Newtown Pike. It happened as Flener was arriving to work around 7:30 Tuesday morning.
Health department officials tell 27 NEWSFIRST the two stabbed the woman in the face while trying to rob her.
"It's a very emotional moment for the health department. We are a pretty close knit family and everyone works well together. So, it's rough walking in, knowing one of your co-workers has been injured," said Kevin Hall with the Fayette County Health Department.
Flener is affiliated with Health First Bluegrass, which operates out of the health department. Hall says her injuries are not life threatening.
Police arrested Daniel B. Hale. He's charged with first degree robbery. Hale yelled expletives at 27 NEWSFIRST photographer Darnell Crenshaw, who had the camera rolling as police took Hale into custody shortly after the crime. Police also tell us that today is Hale's 22nd birthday.
Counselors are being called in to talk with employees of the health department because so man of them witnessed the incident.
"We had a lot of staff members crying, and staff with a level of shock as they're dealing with this. That's why it's important to bring in help from outside to make sure we can move forward," said Hall.
Health department officials do say they have a surveillance system. They believe this is an isolated incident.
