Midway College's Interim President Dr. Robert L. Vogel announced today that he has appointed Dr. Marlene M. Helm as Vice President for Academic Affairs - the newly created top academic post at the College.
Helm has been with Midway College since the Spring 2011 semester when she joined as the Teacher Education Graduate Program Chair to oversee the development and launch of the College's first master's level program in education.
Helm is a graduate of the University of Kentucky where she received her Master of Arts and Doctorate in Education. She received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Kentucky State University.
Prior to coming to Midway, Helm most recently served as the Commissioner of Social Services for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. Prior to that, she held numerous positions in education at Morehead State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College, the Fayette County and Scott County School Systems, and as Secretary of Education, Arts and Humanities Cabinet for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
"Dr. Helm's experience will be a true asset to the College. She is a good listener, thoughtful, thorough and deeply committed to student learning," said Dr. Vogel. "The College has realized significant enrollment growth over the last few years and we need someone with Dr. Helm's experience to help us continue to strengthen our core academic programs and ensure that everything we do is enhancing our student's educational experience. By working with our faculty and staff, Dr. Helm will help the College establish a new strategic plan of ways we can serve our current students while also planning for future students and smart growth of the College."
Helm assumes her duties as the Vice President for Academic Affairs effective immediately and will serve a one year appointment through May 2013.
