A man is in the hospital after being hit by a pickup truck. It happened at W.D. Auction House on Leestown Road. Police first got the call around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.
Police tell 27 NEWSFIRST a man was backing his pickup truck into the loading dock area to pick up a couch. Investigators believe he mistakenly hit the gas, instead of the brake. We're told he backed inside the building, hitting a man.
"It was so fast, I didn't even know what was happening," exclaimed Donald Southworth, owner of WD Auction House in Meadowthorpe.
As he surveyed the major damage, he couldn't believe his eyes.
"I was standing behind the truck had just moved and he floored the truck. I don't know what had happened," Southworth said.
The driver backed through the store about fifty yards, leaving tire tracks on the ground. The man's friend, Gary Thomas, who was there to help load a couch in the back of the truck, was pinned underneath.
"He drug him all the way through the store, hit that big post there," Southworth explained, pointing to a metal support beam. The damaged beam pulled down part of the ceiling and insulation fell into the show room.
Southworth says the driver then put the truck in drive and sped forward, before going back and forth one more time. This time the man hit a wall destroying thousands of dollars of antiques.
"Another lady who works here with me and I were running for our lives to try and get out of the way," Southworth said.
"And the man who was hit----when I run up and seen him I thought this man wasn't gonna live so I run and called 911," he continued.
Thomas was rushed to UK Hospital and the career auctioneer says he's grateful to be alive.
"I'm in my 22nd year here and have never seen anything like this. I thank God that he was with me, and saved my life."
Thomas is expected to make a full recovery. The driver has not been charged at this time.
