LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's going to cost you more to leave town to celebrate the holiday with your family. Just in time for the Fourth of July holiday, gas prices have jumped.
The jump forces drivers shell out more money to get to their celebration destination. AAA officials say we're paying 15 cents more than this same holiday weekend, compared to last year.
As we welcomed July, we also welcomed an increase in the statewide motor fuels tax. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials say the increase amounts to 2.4 cents per gallon. The money collected from the tax will go towards the state road fund to make improvements to city and county streets and roads. And while travelers are paying more at the pump, many we talked with say you have to do what you have to do.
The highest price of gas we found in Lexington is $3.49 at the Airport Foodmart on Versailles Road, and the lowest in town is $3.12 a gallon at Sam's Club on Nicholasville Road.
The cheapest price in the state that we found was at the Sam's Club in Elizabethtown. A gallon of regular is $3.05 there. The most expensive prices for a gallon of regular is at the Marathon in Burkesville at $3.89.
