LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's been more than a week since fifteen-year-old Shaina Witt was struck by a car while riding her bike on Man O' War. Talking for the first time, her family told WKYT that her condition is not improving.
"It took a turn for the worst and at one point everybody I think thought she wasn't going to make it," explains Witt's cousin, Billy Carroll. "We didn't give up hope, we believe in her. Some of her vital signs are improving but others are not. We're hoping for a miracle, we know she can do this." Carroll tells us that Shaina is in a drug induced coma and is still listed in critical condition with life threatening injuries. "We've got family with her 24-hours a day, around the clock. We know she can push through this, she has such a will to live. Her family needs her, she is everything to them."
The incident occurred at the intersection of Man-o-War and Boston Road last Friday evening. Witnesses told police that the driver of a Toyota struck Whitt as she was crossing from the outside of Man-o-War to the inside of Man-o-War, against a red light. Whitt received life threatening injuries after being thrown from her bike, and remains in critical condition at UK Hospital. The teenager was not wearing a helmet, and according to police, the driver of the vehicle isn’t likely to face charges based on witness testimony.
The family is now turning to the public for prayers and hope. "Just to pray," explains Carroll, "we're asking for no donations, nothing. Just give hope that she makes a full recovery and that she pulls through this."
The Facebook page, “Prayers for Shaina Whitt” has been created by her family in order to request prayers for Shaina’s recovery and to update the public on her condition.
