LEXINGTON, Ky. - (WKYT) - He originally received life in prison for killing his ex-lover in a shopping center parking lot. But now, a convicted murderer's sentence has been changed.
Months after the Kentucky Supreme Court overturned Toby Lasure's conviction and sentence---he pleaded guilty to murder and took a lesser sentence Thursday.
Lasure killed Chris Tolliver outside Lexington Green in 2009.
So what does Tolliver's family think about the reduced sentence?
“It has been really hard. Anytime you sit through a trial, you relive everything. You see the pictures which are really hard to have to see,” said Tolliver’s sister, Joyce Middleton.
Lasure pled guilty to murder on Thursday and was sentenced to 30 years behind bars.
“As his sister, the sentence should have been more because Chris’s family and I lost our rights in all of this.”
Prosecutors consulted with the Tolliver family before a new plea deal was offered.
“When he agreed to take the 30 year sentence and pled guilty to intentional murder, we decided to go that route rather than having to relive the trial again."
They say they prefer a lesser sentence rather than going through the nightmare of another murder trial.
“The way I understand it is that he cannot appeal after this. We are relieved that it’s over. We feel that in light of the ruling, justice has been served.”
Lasure will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years in prison.
