The Christmas tree in Lexington's city hall is wrapped up in blue tarp and on Friday it must go by order of the Fire Department.
The 16-foot live tree constitutes a fire hazard and violates a state regulation on natural trees in places of public assembly.
Fire officials say they followed up on a complaint about the tree and had to do their job.
They stress this had nothing to do with a recent battle over health insurance.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports workers will move the tree to a balcony above the main entrance to the building.
