Members of a firm studying the future of Lexington's Rupp Arena said Wednesday they're getting some ideas on how to develop the area around the arena.
The Space Group, an architectural firm, has been hired by the city of Lexington to help plan what has become known as the Arena, Arts and Entertainment District, which includes Rupp Arena and the Lexington Center.
Members of the firm, along with members of a city task force set up to look into Rupp Arena's future, said Wednesday they've been traveling throughout the United States to look at successful entertainment and arena districts in other cities.
Researchers said they were most impressed with the Nationwide Arena district in Columbus, Ohio, and the Allen Fieldhouse district in Lawrence, Kansas.
Members of the firm and members of the task force hope Lexington's Arena, Arts, and Entertainment District will compete with the new KFC Yum! Center in Louisville.
The task force says Lexington's district will take several more years of planning and research, but they're excited about the possibilities of developing the 46 acres there.
