LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Monday morning's snow caused major travel trouble for some airlines.
WKYT received reports of passengers stranded on planes sitting on the runway for more than four hours. Officials at Blue Grass Airport just updated us at 5 p.m., saying the congestion on the runways has been fixed, and it's now business as usual.
A US Airways flight, scheduled to take off from Blue Grass Airport this morning, was canceled. A US Airways representative says this occurred because crews were unable to de-ice the plane.
We talked with one passenger who says they sat on the runway waiting for a truck to de-ice their plane for more than four hours.
"They kept telling us 10 minutes, 10 minutes, 10 minutes, and well anyways, long story short it turned 4.5 hours. 4.5 hours we were on that plane," said Libby Adkins, a passenger on a delayed plane with US Airways.
Adkins says she wound up missing a cruise docked in Florida.
"We had to cancel our cruise because the cruise was slotted to go out at four o'clock from Miami," said Adkins. "And they wouldn't even hear of trying to reroute us to Miami."
When we asked the airport about the issues, a spokesperson told us basically planes were waiting to be de-iced, and the ramps got congested. Airport officials say it's each airline's responsibility to de-ice their own planes, saying the airport is only responsible for clearing runways and taxi ways with plows.
An Allegiant Air flight coming in from Florida to Blue Grass Airport had to wait more than an hour to unload passengers and bags. A representative from Allegiant Air says the plane had to wait for a gate.
Airport officials say those gates are rented to individual airlines, and the airlines renting them are in charge of making sure they're open and ready.
