Former teacher pleads not guilty to sexual abuse charges

Jason Thompson appeared before a judge for the first time today in Fayette District Court to answer to charges he sexually abused a 13-year-old boy.

Jason Thompson didn't have any comment as he walked into the courtroom today, accused of sexual abuse. The former Leestown Middle School teacher was arraigned this afternoon in Fayette County District Court. His attorney entered a "not guilty" plea.

Fayette County school officials say they got an anonymous tip about Thompson inappropriately touching a child who was not a student in June of last year. They say that alleged incident did not take place on school property. When they confronted him about it, they say he resigned. Thompson had worked at the school as a teacher and dance instructor since 2007.

"We have a background check that's part of the hiring process for any of our staff members and that's just part of what our ongoing procedures are and there was nothing that stood out or he wouldn't have been an employee," said Dr. Tom Shelton, Fayette County Schools superintendent.

Fayette County School officials tell us they've now gotten two more tips about possible abuse that aren't related to the first case. They sent parents of current and former Leestown students a letter telling them about the situation. They said they want anyone who might know about other potential cases to come forward.

"We'd always hope that students, parents, staff, whoever it might be would share that information because we want to do the right thing," said Dr. Shelton.

Thompson is due back in court August 16.
