Home Builders Association of Lexington Announces
Commitment to New “MPG” Home Label in Building -
National Industry Standard For Energy Efficiency and Savings

JULY 12, 2012 • 10AM • 3012 BLACKFORD PARKWAY

Lori H. Flanery, secretary of the Finance and Administration Cabinet, will be speaking at the press conference.

LEXINGTON, KY – As concern about energy efficiency continues to grow, the Home Builders Association of Lexington (HBAL) leads the way in the nation with higher building standards that save energy and money, as well as a new way to accurately show those savings: The Home Energy Rating System Index (HERS), the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured and the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home's energy performance.

Developed by Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), a national organization dedicated to energy efficiency, the Home Energy Rating System Index (HERS) is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured and the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home's energy performance.

“We’re proud that HBAL is the first Home Builders Association in the nation to support the HERS rating system by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) committing to encourage 100% of its builder members to participate in the Energy Smart Builder Program by signing their own MOU with RESNET as a commitment to rate 100% of their new homes,” he said. “This is an excellent marketing tool to help builders sell their homes.”

“A home rated on the HERS Index will be given a score based upon its energy performance as determined by a certified RESNET Home Energy Rater,” Johnson explained. “The LOWER the score, the more energy efficient the home. Consumers will value this label as the standard for energy efficiency and performance.”

These building standards will be on display at one of the two “Homes of Excellence” featured on this year’s Grand Tour of Homes. The Chestnut Springs will be the site of the press conference, and it is located at 3012 Blackford Parkway, which is just off Man O’ War Boulevard.

The two Homes of Excellence were built by a team of HBAL professional builder members and demonstrates the organization’s leadership role in advancing energy efficiency. “We want to show how committed HBAL members are to promoting energy efficiency,” Johnson added. “It’s a wonderful benefit for home owners and it’s a great way to show HBAL is leading the way.”
