Homes evacuated after gas leak

LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) - Lexington fire crews say a person doing work in the backyard of a home hit a natural gas line Saturday morning. The person was using a backhoe in the backyard of a home on Beverly Avenue when he hit a natural gas line.

Emergency crews had to evacuate two homes on Beverly Avenue, near the gas leak, until the leak could be capped. Lexington Police also had one lane of Old Paris Road closed for emergency crews working on the problem. The leak was contained and the road back open by 10am.

You can call 811 for information on possible underground utilities in Kentucky. The phone line operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also get information at http://www.kentucky811.org.

The contractor working in the backyard says he did call 811 earlier this week, before he began the project. He says the gas company had not put a tracer on the line his backhoe hit, causing its location to not show up on the email report he received. He says the gas company is looking into why the line wasn't marked.
