Hundreds pack Keeneland for 'Girls on the Run' race

Dozens of girls braved the cold for a run Saturday morning as part of Central Kentucky's Girls on the Run 5K. They were all part of a life-changing, non-profit program designed to help young women gain confidence and good health.

"It gives them the courage to step up and do something together as a group," noted parent Chris Cathers, talking about his 10-year-old daughter, "it's given her more confidence in school to get up in front of a group, and it's also given her an opportunity to recognize strengths in other people and to tell them about it."

Girls on the Run is a non-profit program in Central Kentucky for young women anywhere from third to eight grade. It's a running club focused on building relationships, life skills development, and instilling self esteem in girls growing up. Family and fans of these young women carry signs and shout for their loved ones.

"The confidence is amazing that we've seen transform her. She doesn't have to be with momma all the time. She can go off with her group and have a blast," said Teresa Maley about her granddaughter, a participant in the race.
