Investigators hunt for evidence in Lexington murder

CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Firefighters call it slow, tedious, monotonous work. They're sifting through several feet of mud and in some situations, can't even see their hand in front of their face.

Police say Trustin Jones shot and killed Derek Pelphrey Tuesday night, then dumped the gun.

"We're slowly, systematically looking for evidence that was thrown from the bridge," said Major William Saunooke of the Lexington Fire Department.

It's not as simple as just popping their heads underwater and taking a look.

"Once they get in the water, they can see about 6 inches. If they stir up any silt or mud, they can't even see their hand in front of their face. You're in the water and you're using feel mostly. The odds of seeing the object are very very slim," said Saunooke.

Jones is also charged with robbery stemming from an incident on Zandale Drive last month. He also appears to be an aspiring rapper. A link on his Facebook page sends you to a YouTube page featuring his music videos.

Today, Derek Pelphrey's family issued us this statement expressing gratitude to to the Lexington police and the community for their support.

"Firefighters say they may be back out here tomorrow if need be," said Saunooke.

Jones pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment Thursday afternoon. Robert Guernsey was charged with complicity to murder. He also pleaded not guilty.
