Lexington Fire crews were called out to the old Metropol building on North Short Street in downtown Lexington.
A Lexington Police officer noticed smoke coming from the building around 4:30 a.m. Monday and called it into the fire department.
Firefighters believe the smoke started upstairs. The sprinkler system in the building was activated, but fire crews were needed to put it out.
No one was found inside or around the building when fire crews arrived.
Battalion Chief Brian Wainscott says that this fire may be suspicious in nature,"We don't know for sure. But it looked like one of the front doors was broken out when we arrived. Like I said, when our investigators get here, they'll take a look at it and see."
Wainscott says there is minor smoke and water damage to the inside of the building.
The building is currently under renovation for a new restaurant, The Village Idiot. It was supposed to open sometime this month.
