Lexington-Fayette County community partners announced today that this year’s 2nd Sunday event will take place on Oct. 13, 2-5 p.m., the second Sunday of the month, on the Legacy Trail located Newtown Pike corridor (for specific directions visit 2ndSundayLexington.com). 2nd Sunday is a statewide initiative that encourages all forms of physical activity within the comforts of the local community, and is designed to get Kentuckians on their feet and moving.
Since 2008, the University of Kentucky Extension Service has coordinated community wide 2nd Sunday events by closing downtown streets, airport runways, and/or utilizing existing venues. In its sixth year, citizens are invited to walk, run, bike, rollerblade, skateboard, push a stroller or walk a pet on the Legacy Trail. Family fun activities are planned at the Northside YMCA and Coldstream Trailheads.
For many years, Kentucky has had one of the highest obesity rates in the country. 2nd Sunday is a prime opportunity for local citizens to display their resolve in remedying this status. The Legacy Trail serves as a model for adapting the built environment to increase opportunity for physical activity. Local organizers are challenging the
community to come out and explore the Legacy Trail in support of continuing efforts to improve our community’s health and wellness!
Be there. Be healthy.
