Lexington couple charged with harboring undocumented workers

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - An indictment has been returned against Almutlal Patel and Dakshaben Patel, owners of several Lexington Subway restaurants.

The indictment was just released a few minutes ago by federal court officials.

The indictment charges the Patels with four counts of harboring undocumented Indian nationals by hiding them all for the purposes of financial gain.

This comes as WKYT has been investigating the issue of harboring undocumented nationals and the problem of human trafficking, which advocates tell us harboring is many times an aspect of human trafficking

If convicted the Patels could face up to 10 years in prison, and face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

The Patels were arrested last month by Lexington Police. Federal prosecutors say the Patels required four undocumented Indian nationals to work 10-12 hour days at their Subway restaurants, up to seven days a week, while being paid less than minimum wage and allegedly no overtime pay.
