Body found near search scene for Alex Johnson

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Fayette County Coroner confirms evidence recovered from the Kentucky River Friday afternoon is a body. Lexington Firefighter dive team removed the body from the river as part of an on-going homicide investigation.

The coroner did not release the name of the person or a cause of death. The body has been taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort.

Police blocked off an area along Old Richmond Road leading to the river for most of the day.

Just a few weeks ago, police and Lexington firefighters searched the river in the same area for the body of Alex Johnson. The Lexington man disappeared from his North Hanover Street home on December 20th.

A man wanted in connection to the disappearance of Johnson is now in custody in Texas.

Police in Pharr, Texas tell us they arrested Robert Markham Taylor on Wednesday at a hotel just a few miles from the Mexican border. They say they got a tip from Lexington Police that he was in the area.

Taylor is charged with murder, kidnapping, and tampering with physical evidence in the disappearance of Johnson.

According to his Facebook page, and people who know Taylor, he used to work at a restaurant next the river near the search scene.

Taylor is also charged with possession of marijuana. Pharr Police tell us when they arrested him he had several pounds of marijuana in his vehicle.

A second man, Timothy Ballard, is already in custody in Fayette County on charges of kidnapping and tampering with physical evidence.

A private detective hired by Johnson's family said they are choosing not to comment on the arrest, as they are focused on finding Alex.

Taylor is being held in the Hidalgo County, Texas detention center. A hearing will be scheduled to discuss extradition back to Lexington.
