LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A rash of gas station robberies all happened within hours of each other on Saturday in Lexington.
Police say three Speedway gas stations were held up and they believe the same man may be to blame. Now, investigators are still searching the area with hopes of catching the culprit.
The first robbery happened at the Speedway off Paris Pike around 7:30 Saturday morning.
"He displayed a note, showed the cashier that he had a hand gun, and fled the area on foot with cash.”
Just a few hours later, around 3:30, a man matching the robber's description pulled a similar stunt at the Speedway at the corner of New Circle and Liberty Road.
“He passed the clerk a note that implied he had a weapon on him so the clerk complied with his request and emptied the cash register. He then ran away on foot toward Motorvation Motor Cars and the Peddlers Mall,” said Lt. Chad Bacon with the Lexington Police Department.
Police tell us the suspect was last seen wearing a black zip-up track suit with white stripes down the sleeves, a beanie and had scruffy facial hair. They say he was about 5’8” and weighed around 160 pounds.
Around 8:00 Saturday night, the rash of robberies continued when a man attempted to rob the Speedway off Tates Creek and Old Mount Tabor Road.
But in this rash of robberies, the third time wasn't a charm. The clerk at the Tates Creek Speedway refused to give the crook any cash and that's when police say he ran off.
Investigators aren't sure if there's a rhyme or reason behind the robber only targeting Speedway gas stations. But they say at this point, all Lexington gas stations should keep an extra eye out in case.
“At this point we are considering him armed and dangerous.”
Police say after the third robbery on Tates Creek, the K-9 unit was able to track a scent to a nearby parking lot but the scent suddenly disappeared. Police tell us that typically mean that the suspect got away in a car.
