LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The “Preparing for Success” back-to-school rallies will be Saturday at nearly 20 neighborhood sites around Lexington.
Students and their families can enjoy a morning of lawn games and other outdoor activities as they browse resource booths, snack on hotdogs and pick up free school supplies.
“We try to make it a lot of fun and get the kids looking forward to the school year,” said Julie Balog, vice president of marketing and communications for the YMCA of Central Kentucky, which coordinates the rallies. “Two out of every five kids lives in a family that struggles to provide the basics,” she noted. “The parents and kids are so grateful they have supplies to start the school year.”.
School supplies are provided for all grade levels (primary, elementary, middle and high school), and Balog estimated 7,000 to 8,000 bags will be distributed. Registration runs from 9 to 11 a.m., with the backpack giveaway at noon. Students must be with a parent or guardian to receive supplies.
On Tuesday, some 60 football players from Lafayette High School unloaded a tractor-trailer full of 700 Kits for Kidz boxes at Gardenside Christian Church, where community and corporate volunteers sorted and bagged the supplies. In addition, the YMCA donated a new book for each backpack, and Kentucky Utilities provided T-shirts for the workers..
The ninth annual neighborhood rallies are also supported by sponsor Passport Health Plan, the Fayette Education Foundation and Fayette County Public Schools.
