Lois Turner Dees loses battle with lung cancer

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - She was known for overcoming the odds. A Flight 5191 widow has lost her battle with lung cancer. Lois Turner Dees, a teacher at Lexington Christian Academy, lost her husband in Flight 5191 back in 2006. Dees helped with the creation of the commemorative sculpture that stands inside the Arboretum, dedicated to all 49 victims of the wreck. She often spoke to WKYT about her family's struggle with the crash, and the faith that helped them move forward.

"My two daughters have gotten married in the ensuing six years and one of them had a baby so I have a granddaughter and then my son has just begun his last year of law school at UK. I would hope that Larry would be proud of us for the way that we have continued on," Turner Dees told us in 2012.

In 2011, doctors diagnosed Dees with lung cancer. Dees had never been a smoker and never lived with one. Doctors suspected her cancer came from high levels of radon in her home. Normal levels range between zero and four. When she had her home tested, Dees discovered levels at 32. Dees had a radon abatement system installed, and became an advocate of radon testing, encouraging families to have their homes tested regularly.

Dees taught math to middle school students at Lexington Christian Academy.

"Her focus was always on someone else. Even though she may have been dealing with some difficulties over the last few years in particular with her illness the focus. Even right until the very end was how can she serve someone else," remembered LCA Chairman of the Board Kurt Braun, "She saw it as a blessing on her to be able to serve here at LCA, but in reality the school was blessed by her presence."

Visitation for Turner Dees will be from 5-9 p.m. Monday, September 23 at Southland Christian Church on Harrodsburg Road. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 24 at the church.
