Since reopening in 2010 the Lyric Theater has played host to a number of different types of programs. This year theater-goers will get to experience and honor a jazz legend.
The Duke Ellington Jazz series is a partnership between the UK Jazz Orchestra and the American Spiritual Ensemble.
Organizers say the history of the venue makes it a perfect place to feature the music of Ellington, one of the most prolific composers in American history.
"Lexington was so fortunate to have a theater like the Lyric where African American artists could come and perform," said Dr. Everett McCorvey, UK Professor of Voice.
Organizers plan to use the events to reach out to schools, and help educate people in the community about the history of not only the theater, but the music being played there.
"We have to make sure the young people know about the great jazz tradition in our American culture," said Dr. McCorvey
While the original funding will allow for three concerts, organizers say if they can raise the money, they would like to have five total. The first of these shows is scheduled for February 24th. At least two more shows will take place later this year.
