Emergency crews rushed a child to UK Hospital Tuesday, after a stray dog attacked the boy while he was walking with his sisters.
The children's mother says they were walking to a nearby store, to get something to drink, when they ran across the dog, on Maryland Avenue.
The children told her the dog was friendly at first, but when her 9-year-old son William went to pet him, the dog jumped and grabbed the side of his head. She says she heard her son screaming, and ran out of the house to see the dog biting him around his ear and near his throat.
She says that's when instinct took over. "I went down there, jumped on it, grabbed his teeth, I mean literally went into his month, grabbed it, told my son to sit still and jerked his mouth open and told my son to go," said the mother, who doesn't want to be identified.
Her son William had to get 50 stitches around his ear. He is now back at home recovering.
Animal Control has found a dog that could be the one that attacked William. They plan to show the family pictures of the dog to see if it's the one responsible for the attack.
The mother is having trouble paying for her son's surgery. The family has set up an account with U.S. Bank. If you'd like to help with their expenses, you can drop off checks or money in William Boswell's name at any U.S. Bank.
