LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - An early morning crash killed a woman who was in her early 20s and seriously injured the man who was with her, according to the Fayette County coroner.
"The driver is in the ICU at the UK Hospital," said coroner Gary Ginn.
Ginn believes the driver was speeding on Athens Boonesboro Road in a Honda Accord when he crashed into an 18-wheeler turning onto Blue Sky Road.
He says the driver was thrown 30 feet and the young woman was killed around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Ginn says he is trying to figure out if alcohol was involved in the crash.
"We did find alcohol in the trunk. To say that this is due to alcohol, I can't do that because it was in the trunk. There is some missing out of it but it's possible that the wreck caused the bottle to leak," he said.
He tells WKYT they will run toxicology tests on the woman who died.
"It's a bad deal, bad way to start the holiday," said Chad, a driver who asked WKYT to only use his first name.
Some drivers say the deadly crash has them worried about hitting the road this holiday weekend.
"We're down here from Owensboro, Kentucky for the state softball tournament. With holiday travel people get in a hurry and bad things can happen whenever you speed," Chad said.
Ginn said, "Be safe, drive the speed limit and don't drink and drive.”
He says the woman who was killed and the driver were not wearing seat belts.
Ginn tells WKYT he is waiting to identify the woman until her family has been notified.
Police say the Crash Reconstruction Unit will decide if the driver should be charged.
