LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police say a woman misrepresented herself as the owner of a daycare on and offered to sell it to someone for $30,000. It was only after that money was paid, that police say the victim realized she'd been scammed.

The Megaminds Educare is operating under new management, but police say the road to that reopening was rough.

"There's no shortage of ways for people to try to find to steal other people's money," said Sherelle Roberts.

Police say Letaniya Warren used to own the day care.

"She had to sign the day care away because of some financial difficulties, not being able to pay her bills, not being able to pay her investors, so her investors said ok we're going to take this property back and we'll forgive your debts basically if you let us have this business again," said Roberts.

But then, they say she saw an opportunity.

"With some quick maneuvering, a lot of fast-talking, and some trickery, she was able to pretend she was still the owner or still had the right to sell this day care, made a deal with someone, took their money," said Roberts.

Police say someone gave her a check for $30,000.

"Took the money, cashed the check, ran," said Roberts.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Warren. The person who police say paid that money is now running the business, but she declined to speak on camera.

WKYT spoke with Warren Monday evening, she said the charges are false and she plans to fight them.
