A mystery at an abandoned apartment complex, where police say they found a badly decomposed body. Investigators don't know if the remains found on Codell Drive near New Circle and Richmond Road in Lexington are those of a man or a woman.
Police tell WKYT a maintenance crew working on the third floor of a building in an abandoned apartment complex found a skeleton Tuesday afternoon.
"This neighborhood has a bad reputation," notes neighbor Tony Rose, "I'm surprised they haven't found somebody by this time, earlier."
Investigators don't know who it is, or even what gender it could be right now. They say the decay tells them the body's been there since the winter. They don't believe the person died from foul play.
Neighbors tell WKYT they see guards patrolling 24/7, there's even signs posted on the surrounding gates, warning others not to trespass. Despite the security, a lot of them told us they're not really surprised someone found a dead body on the property.
"Seems like the police are here all the time. You hear the police going by all the time, there's always something going on over here," Rose notices.
Police are trying to identify the body. Forensic teams hope to determine a gender, and a possible age, and eventually a name. With no one living in the old Pennington Place apartments for the last few years, it's hard to tell who crews found inside.
The old, vacant apartments have caused controversy for years. Back in January, the property was sold to a Florida firm, which said it would complete an engineering study on the complex. Nearly two years ago, police investigated two suspicious fires at the complex, other suspicious fires were reported in January of 2009.
