27 Newsfirst has learned that the victim of a fiery crash was a prosecutor of the Fayette County Attorney's Office.
Fayette County Attorney Larry Roberts says he spoke with the parents of Brian Mattone, 40, last night.
"He was the epitome of a public servant," Roberts said. "He loved helping people.'
Roberts says he was notified about the crash by a colleague, and was called to the scene late last night.
"I knew it was him, he never misses work," Roberts said.
Investigators say Mattone's white SUV somehow went off Old Frankfort Pike, near US 62 in Woodford County, and slammed into a tree. The SUV burst into flames, making it difficult to identify the victim. The Woodford County coroner confirmed Mattone's identity late Thursday afternoon.
"He will be very difficult to replace and he will be greatly missed in this office," ended Roberts.
Mattone served as the First Assistant County Attorney since 2006. Prior to working with the County Attorney's office, Mattone worked as a prosecutor at the Fayette Commonwealth Attorney's Office. He also worked in the criminal division of Fayette District Court. He also attended law school at the University of Kentucky.
Investigators say speed may be a contributing factor in the crash. Police will also be reviewing toxicology reports from the Medical Examiner's Office when they become available.
