LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - An accident on a moped left a young girl paralyzed from the waist down.
14-year-old Lindley Barker is at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital. She had an accident in Clark County over the weekend left her paralyzed from the waist down.
"We were letting them ride on our moped type scooter. I had stepped inside the camper and I heard something," said her mother, Teresa Barker.
What Barker heard was her daughter crashing and being flung from the moped.
"She was on it and she was flying over the embankment. I took off out the door as quick as I could and ran around and she was on the ground by the time I got there," said Barker.
Lindley Barker was rushed to UK Hospital with serious injuries.
"Her back was broken and she's got some fractures in her neck. She has no feeling from about the breast bone down."
Teresa tells WKYT her daughter could only think of one thing.
"I'm glad this happened to me and not Seth. He's her twelve-year old little brother. She said 'because I don't think he can do this.'
Lindley's mother says the teen is determined.
"It didn't take her too long to say 'Mom, I'll brush my teeth. I'll wash my face. I'll feed myself.'"
"She's amazing. I mean, it's like we've sat there and said that she's supposed to be learning from us, but 99% of us that are around her right now are learning from her."
