The setting is the lobby of The Hotel Baltimore where the ‘e’ on the hotel’s marquee has burned out, hence the title of the play. Wilson’s play is peopled with our forgotten Americans on the periphery of society fighting and dreaming for a better life. Mel Gussow wrote in the NY Times 1973 review, “At the playwright's invitation we share lives that are both comic and wistful. This is a play to be savored and to be cherished.” The Hot l Baltimore is a poignant powerful call to America to recover lost values and to restore itself in its own and the world’s eyes.
