It can help keep us connected with family and friends, but we've also seen examples of how social media can get you in a lot of trouble.
A recent example, the pictures of unruly fans during UK's National Championship celebrations. "I always tell my students to be aware of where they are and what they are doing," explains Journalism Professor Melvin Coffee, "That is why you have to be careful about everything that you do and be aware. You never know if you're being recorded or not."
The Lexington Police Department say within the past two weeks, the ID dot com website has generated more than a hundred thousand views from just this area. "I had a student tell me that his picture was on the website but that he had nothing to do with anything that happened," explains Coffee. "It's unfortunate but at times you have to look at the situation you're in and realize that you might be associated with things you're not involved with. You have to play it safe, social media is a great tool but if you're not smart you can find yourself in a lot of trouble."
Lexington Police say they've received more than a hundred tips thanks to the ID dot com website.
