Tom Shelton chosen to be next Fayette County superintendent

The Fayette County Board of Education has chosen Daviess County Superintendent Tom Shelton to be the district's next superintendent.

The decision was announced during a meeting Friday night.

Shelton has been Daviess County superintendent since 2004, when he replaced Stu Silberman, who left to become Fayette County superintendent.

The board has offered Shelton a three year, 10 month contract, worth $240,000 a year.

Shelton was chosen over Clark County Superintendent Elaine Farris and Jessamine County Superintendent Lu Young, the two other finalists.

Silberman plans to retire as Fayette County superintendent later this summer.

Shelton - the only finalists with a business background - calls Silberman a good friend and mentor. He says he'd like to continue the progress he sees happening in Fayette County.

"I really truly believe this can be the best school district in the county and I'm just really honored to be here and to have this opportunity to continue the great work that's been going on here," says Superintendent Shelton.
