Vigil held for sex abuse victim

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) -- Friends and family of a woman who died after an attack at a Lexington strip club gathered to remember her Wednesday night.

A vigil was held for Melissa Smiley outside Fillies Gentleman's Club on Winchester Road.

Police say Smiley was sexually abused inside the club last Thursday, after she fainted. She died Monday.

People at Wednesday's vigil said they wanted to honor Smiley, and raise money for funeral expenses.

"We are deeply saddened over this situation, she was a true victim, and a life taken away too short. It was really important to honor Melissa... Melissa Smiley was fierce, and was our beloved daughter, and we just wanted to honor her tonight," said Sarah Hall, who attended the vigil.

Lexington police charged Clyde Sexton with sexual abuse after the attack.

Police say Sexton told them he and Smiley had been painting inside the club when she fainted.
