Worker says shoplifter nearly ran him over

Deepam Patel says he didn't hesitate when he saw a woman trying to shoplift from his store. But he got more than he bargained for when he stepped into action.

"It was pretty scary," he says.

Surveillance video shows a woman walk into the store, then appear to shove items into her jacket before heading for the door. says he knew what she was up to and had already called police. He chased her outside where he says things got violent.

"I ran from the counter and went outside to try to stop her. She tried to back up as I tried to stop her car. She backed up fast and tried to drive from there. She almost hit me so I jumped and go back," says Patel.

Thankfully, Patel escaped injury. Witnesses said they knew who the woman was and gave police an address. They caught up with the alleged shoplifter at a nearby apartment. Police arrested 19-year-old Donetta Wilson, charging her with robbery. Patel's regular customers say he's a kind man who shouldn't have to deal with troublemakers.

"What kind of a person he is, he's helped out my sister and my mom multiple times. If anybody needs anything, then he's there. Then somebody wanting to take something from him and forcibly hurt him...it's not right," says Sara Diaz.

Patel says that Wilson will no longer be allowed in the store.
