27NEWSFIRST continues to gather details about a badly decomposed body, found in a trash can.
Lexington police found the body Wednesday afternoon on Fortune Drive near Trade Center Drive. As soon as people working nearby got out to their cars, they started asking questions of their own, wondering who investigators found inside the trash can.
"It's not every day you hear about this. Especially in our back yard where we work," says Karin Arteburn.
She watched as police searched the wood line, and hauled out the trash can where investigators found a body.
"It is definitely not in a secluded spot at all. There are people everywhere. Two buildings very close together where a lot of people work, so it was surprising, the location."
Police started searching the area after getting a tip on a missing person case filed in December. Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn says the body's so badly decomposed, he can't tell if it's a woman or man.
"The body is in kind of a mummified, decomposed state at this point," says Ginn.
He is taking the body to Frankfort for a forensic autopsy, and hoping dental records will help them identify it. Until then, police won't know if this is the same person reported missing.
Police expect to have positive identification on the person Thursday.
