Woody Guthrie, For the People

Lexington, KY: Lexington-based folksinger Michael Johnathon will be featured and several of the arias from his original opera "WOODY: For the People" will be the focus of the nationally broadcast program THE STORY with Dick Gordon (American Public Media) on Thursday FEB 23. This is also the anniversary date that Woody completed the lyrics to his most famous song, and the subject of the opera, This Land Is Your Land. The arias from the opera WOODY: For The People have been released on a brand new CD nationwide.

The setting of the opera is a cold winter day in late 1939 when Woody, in real life, was almost killed in an ice storm while hitching through Pennsylvania. It was the kindness of a Pennsylvania Ranger that saved his life and inspired Woody to begin the writing of "This Land Is Your Land."

Michael is also the host and creator of the WOODSONGS OLD-TIME RADIO HOUR (505 radio stations, American Forces Radio Network and Public-TV via NETA) that broadcasts from the history Kentucky Theater in downtown Lexington and authored the play Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau registered over 8,200 for performance in community theaters and colleges in 42 countries. His new album is called FRONT PORCH.
