Anna Melvin wins another term

Incumbent Anna Melvin and Michael Hogan were both campaigning to represent Martin, Lawrence, and Johnson Counties.

Melvin beat Hogan by a little more than 400 votes.

WYMT’s Whitney Burks caught up with Melvin right after the votes were counted.

“Well I feel like it went as we expected. There were really no surprises. We predicted about a 500 vote win. We all worked very hard. Everybody on my staff worked hard. We all have looked forward to this moment, but we believe that we give the public, we're true public servants. We believe that we are there to serve the people, and I believe that it's a mandate for us to continue to do the kind of work that we do, that we have been doing, as well as all the programs we are doing that are above and beyond anything that a Commonwealth's Attorney's office has to do or is required to do,” Melvin said.

“In this circuit we have an in home incarceration program through a grant that I wrote. Last year we saved almost 400 thousand dollars. This year it will be at least 450 thousand dollars and perhaps more. We have a growing up safe program that provides programs for the public schools and any school here that wants it. We have the DATA group, the Drug Alcohol and Tobacco Awareness group, that we present programs to the schools, and we work on the drug program and write other grants and try to make this community better by changing the culture of acceptance of drugs. And we continue to do those kinds of things every year that I'm in office. We are always looking for opportunities to change the culture and make people more aware of the problems that we have and make it a better place to live,” said Melvin.

When asked about her opponent in the race she says they will remain a team, “Just congratulations on a good race, and you can continue as county attorney and we'll still be working together and I just want to thank all the supporters for everything that they've done to help me in this race. Thank you so much,”

Melvin has been the Commonwealth's Attorney for Martin, Lawrence, and Johnson Counties for 19 years.
