She has been the cornerstone of WYMT's Mountain Family for more than two decades, but come June 1st, WYMT's General Manager Ernestine Cornett will retire.
She has greatly impacted the television station during her years here and she says she has loved every minute of it.
Ernestine Cornett has led the WYMT team for nearly 30 years.
“I want to always be thought of as a person who always treated others with respect, was able to get the job done and empower people to do the best that they can do and be the best that they can be,” Cornett said.
She was surprised when Wayne Martin offered her the general manager job.
“I didn’t feel like I was management material until he recommended me and then I thought well I guess I can do this or at least I can try,” Cornett said.
Martin says his faith in Ernestine never faltered, “It’s been a wonderful team. Ernestine’s way of going about things so efficiently and effectively and not having an ego,” WKYT General Manager/Regional Vice President Gray Television Wayne Martin said.
Ernestine says all of her co-workers have become friends over the years and many of them are just like family.
“I went up to her today and very literally called her mom. It will be like someone in the family being gone,” Longtime WYMT employee Kevin C. Hill said.
“Yeah it’s hard. Always hard to say goodbye,” Cornett said.
For the future, many hope she simply stays in touch.
“Give us a call every now and then. We'll be here,” Hill said.
“With this TV station, in its existence since 1985 it is such a value for this area and I hope that east Kentucky always cherishes WYMT,” Cornett said.
She is one woman who influenced countless co-workers and community members through Your Mountain Television.
Ernestine will be dearly missed and always remembered by every member of the staff here at WYMT.
News Director Neil Middleton was named as her replacement.
