MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - UPDATE 10/21/13 5:49 p.m.:
A Martin County staple is now in ruins.
Nestled in a tiny Martin County community, the Pigeon Roost Dairy Bar was described by many as a gathering place.
"Memories of Martin County, you can ask, Pigeon Roost, Walker's, the Dairy Bar. It would come up on somebody's radar," said employee Tosha Jude.
Sunday employees got a call they could not believe. Their beloved Dairy Bar caught fire around 11:00 that night.
"I just told one of the girls it's like a dream. I'm waiting to wake up from it. It's like last night when they called me I laughed at them. I told them they were lying to me. It was a joke. And then I busted out in tears and ran down here," said Jude.
People were stopping by all day Monday to see what was left of the place they called a pillar in their community.
"When I saw it, it just broke my heart. There's nothing here for these kids to come and enjoy ice cream. It's a very big loss to our community," said customer Mandy Fields.
Owners Lonnie and Dottie Robinson were too distraught to talk about the fire, and say they are not sure if they will be able to rebuild.
"Pretty much all the girls that worked here depended on the Dairy Bar income, and it was just one big family and everybody loved each other here and everybody depended on it," said Jude.
Officials have not determined a cause for the fire, but they believe it may have started around the heat pump.
An investigation is underway following an overnight fire at a Martin County business.
Dispatchers say it happened at the Pigeon Roost Dairy Bar on Route 1714 around 11:00 Sunday night.
Firefighters from the Warfield, Inez and Kermit volunteer fire departments responded.
No one was injured. No word on what started the fire.
