Six high school football players were taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after school officials say they became sick because of the heat.
It happened during morning practice at Rowan County High School.
School officials say during a water break, coaches noticed one player having trouble catching his breath.
The coaches then noticed he was showing signs of heat exhaustion, so they called 911 and put ice on his body until paramedics arrived.
School officials say the coaches noticed some other players were also showing signs of heat exhaustion. In all, 4 players were taken by ambulance to Saint Claire Regional Medical Center and 2 others were taken by family members.
School officials say the heat index at the time of the practice was in the upper 80s, still in the parameters deemed safe.
Hospital officials say 5 of the players were expected to be released today while one was going to be kept overnight for observation.
