Family, friends say goodbye to firefighter killed in logging accident

ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Friends and family are remembering a volunteer firefighter captain, killed in a logging accident. The Rowan County accident took the life of 30-year-old Josh Ferguson.

"It's almost like having a son that everyone wanted," said Elliottville Fire Department Chief Jackie Thomas, "he just always wanted to give and help anyone that he could."

Chief Thomas's friend Ferguson died in a logging accident Tuesday. Ferguson was pinned between a bull dozer and a tree. He was able to call his mother before he died. He left behind a grieving family, fiancée, and an entire crew of volunteer firefighters, 18 in all.

"We were planning for a wedding and then this past Tuesday we switched over to a funeral so it's been pretty tragic for us at the station."

Ferguson was the first junior firefighter on the crew, and quickly became known as one of the best, one who could and would do anything for others.

"From washing trucks to rolling hose, anything that needed to be done around the station he was good at. He could jump up and switch off and do pump a truck or go in on a hose line or anything."

Josh will be buried Friday morning with full firefighter honors. His funeral begins at 11 a.m. at Northcutt and Son Home for Funerals.
