Inspired to tell the story about the old 150-year-old barn that was on their property, Gordon and Judy Geagley, Tollesboro, Kentucky, have painted two murals depicting the barn as it was in the late 1800’s and as it looked standing in the field waiting to fall and never be used again. The mural was painted by Gordon Geagley and his daughter, Robin.
Gordon and Judy Geagley are Kentucky Crafted® participants, a state recognition, which designates them as one of Kentucky’s premier craft businesses. Under their business, Judy Geagley By Hand, the Geagley’s design and produce a whimsical line of baby items, bears and soft products made from recycled fabric. They are firm believes in recycling. “We want to keep things from the landfills, “ Judy says, “so not only are our products made from recycled and natural materials, so is our shop.” The Geagleys sell their products in gift shops around the country including several on 5th Avenue in New York City. Now they can be purchased in the gift shop that Gordon built from the used timbers of the old barn.
The Geagleys have been a part of the Made In Appalachia (MiAppa) tourism initiative and both have been teachers in the program. “We are committed to bringing tourists to Lewis County,” Judy says, “and we know how important our history is in doing that,” Judy says.
The gift shop is regularly opened Tuesday – Saturday 9 am. – 5 pm. Or by appointment. The annual “Early Kentucky Christmas” will be Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3 with special hours, 10 am - 7 pm (EST), both days. In addition to the Geagley’s items, the shop is filled with many other Kentucky artists’ products made from recycled materials and Kentucky Proud food.
