MOREHEAD, Ky. (WYMT) - After spending almost three hours looking for a missing Morehead State student, search crews found him unharmed.
Officials said they found 20-year-old Robert Vander Laan in a ravine just after 4 a.m. Friday.
Police say they received a call at 1:15 a.m. that a student went into the woods near Eagle Lake before dark to go for a walk and could not be located.
Vander Laan called his roommate 12:30 a.m. and said he was lost. He told his roommate he had no flashlight and only his cell phone. Police said Vander Laan's roommate call 911.
Emergency crews dispatched two boats in the water to search the lake and four ground teams. Boat teams didn't find anything in Eagle Lake so they joined the ground search.
The crews found Vander Laan on the west side of lake search about a mile away after yelling for him. He made verbal contact with the search crews.
"It's easy to get lost when you get in there. It's a heavily wooded area and it's incredibly dark and that's exactly what happened," said Ronnie Day, director of Rowan County Emergency Management.
Police said Vander Laan was slightly dehydrated, but uninjured.
