Morehead falls in shootout

LORETTO, Pa. – Junior running back Kyle Harbridge rushed for a school-record 346 yards and Saint Francis University (Pa.) rallied from a 21-point deficit to post a 50-49 win over Morehead State University on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Field.

The Red Flash, which plays in the Northeast Conference, improves to 1-2 on the season. The Eagles, who are members of the Pioneer Football League, slip to 1-2 with their second straight setback. MSU has still won five of the seven all-time meetings between the two schools.

Harbridge rushed for 174 yards on 13 carries before halftime and another 172 yards on 17 attempts after the break. He also caught four passes for 52 yards en route to 398 total yards in the win, and scored a total of five times.

Morehead State held a 49-28 advantage midway through the third quarter before Saint Francis went on a scoring spree and forced multiple turnovers. Kicker Josh Thiel capped a 43-yard drive with a 36-yard field goal to make it 49-31 with 4:57 remaining in the third.

Harbridge then danced to the end zone three times in the final period – on runs of 83, four and 10 yards. The scoring drives ranged from one play to seven plays.

After scoring 49 points in the game’s first 37 minutes, MSU failed to score over the contest’s final 23.

SFU’s rally offset another record-setting day for the Morehead State offense. The Eagles, who lead the PFL in total offense and passing yards per game, set school and league records with 512 yards through the air.

Junior quarterback Zach Lewis, who suffered an injury in the second quarter, went 12-of-18 for 318 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. His back-up, sophomore Boone Goldsmith, added a 13-of-25 performance for 194 yards with one score and three picks.

Junior wide receiver Donte Sawyer was MSU’s leading receiver with a career high 183 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. Classmate Kevin Thomas added a personal high 104 receiving yards, also on five receptions.

Morehead State opens its PFL schedule at home next Saturday, Sept. 24, when the University of San Diego Toreros comes to Jayne Stadium for a 12:30 p.m. ET game. Check MSUEagles.com throughout the week for stats, social media updates, game previews and much more.
