Rowan County residents concerned about proposed jail location

ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Neighbors are voicing concerns about the proposed location for a new jail. People living in the Lakeview Heights area in Rowan County say they don't want the new jail to be built near their homes. At Wednesday night's meeting of the Lakeview Heights City Commission, the topic of the jail led to hours of discussion.

"We had a lot of explanation as far as what was taking place," says Tim Miller.

Miller says two magistrates and the jailer told them a site less than two miles away on U.S. 60 was being looked at as a possible location for a new jail that could hold up to 300 inmates. The current jail has 78 beds.

"It was a concern to me because I've got a houseful of children and I just worry about what could happen if it becomes a federal place or someone gets out," says Nikki Scott.

Workers at the Judge-Executive's office said no decision had been made regarding the location.

One of the owners of the property told me they had discussed selling the land with the Judge-Executive and County Attorney, but they were waiting on a decision by the fiscal court.

People living in Morehead and Lakeview Heights have started petitions asking the county to keep the new jail away from residential areas.

Rowan County only has a couple of years to open that new jail. The chief here at the detention center tells me they have to close by October of 2016 because of a land swap deal with Morehead State University. They are actually the ones who own this property.
