MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State senior wide receiver Donte Sawyer and senior quarterback Zach Lewis have earned Pioneer Football League weekly honors after their performances in a 70-28 win over Campbell on Saturday afternoon at Jayne Stadium.
The league office has selected Sawyer as Special Teams Player of the Week, while College Sports Madness has chosen Lewis as Offensive Player of the Week. The award is Sawyer’s first this year, while Lewis was honored by three media outlets on Sept. 2.
Sawyer returned a kick-off 94 yards for a touchdown with 9:15 remaining in the second quarter on Saturday. It was the PFL’s fifth kick return for a score this year and Morehead State’s first since the 2001 campaign (Toby Moeves and Nicholas Wooldridge).
Sawyer, who also collected six catches for 89 yards and one touchdown, set the Morehead State career record for receptions (171) against Campbell. He already has the MSU career standards for receiving yards (2,091) and receiving touchdowns (21).
Lewis wrapped up Saturday’s tilt 27-of-32 for 339 yards and a career-best five touchdowns. His efforts helped the Eagles to season highs in total (700) and passing yards (469). The 70 points were also MSU’s most against a Division I opponent since the 2000 season.
Lewis continued to build on his MSU career records for completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns against Campbell. He is now 874-of-1,410 for 9,461 yards and 66 touchdowns in 37 games as an Eagle. The completions are also an all-time PFL standard.
The Eagles continue their home slate on Saturday when PFL opponent Davidson visits Jayne Stadium at 1 p.m. ET. Visit MSUEagles.com throughout the week for updates on MSU football.
